  5. [S134] Unknown author, 'Prison and Birch Rod', "PRISON AND BIRCH ROD
At Northampton Assizes yesterday DENNIS IRVING, 20, a Grenadier Guardsman, was sentenced to 21 months' hard labour and ordered to receive 15 strokes with the birch rod "on the bare flesh during the first six months of his sentence." He had pleaded "Guilty" to assaulting Marion Cowley and Doris Allen with intent to rob them while armed with a pistol at a Rugby sub-post office on April 2 : and to stealing a motor-car at Rugby on the same day : and robbing Annie Iddison, wife of the licensee of the Pembroke Castle Hotel, Mount Vernon Street, Liverpool, of £6 10s, while armed with an automatic pistol on April 1. MR. JUSTICE CROOM-JOHNSON, referring to the resolution displayed by the two women in the post office, told Irving: "You showed that besides being a bully, you were a coward. You ran away, But for the pluck of those people in the post office you would obviously be going about the country with this loaded weapon. You were going to terrorize women and live on the country. That cannot be permitted for a single instant.""
